During the numerous Covid lockdowns, I started writing my teddy bear stories to cheer up my friends in Texas. This was solely needed when one of them took ill with cancer and had to spend over a year in hospital, away from home, for the grueling treatment. It was a sad, heartbreaking period for all of us.
Each night, Damond would read the latest installment of my story to Frances over the phone. She would grin from her hospital bed, enjoying the antics of the cheeky bears and furry friends. The stories kept her and the rest of us together, amid her ongoing battle with the illness.
Frances fought the cancer for as long as her strength permitted. She followed the diet plan, went for walks, and endured the arduous chemo regime. She did anything and everything that would buy her time. Not a word of complaint ever came from her.
But at length, the battle came to an end. Frances has now ridden off into the sunset on her beloved horse, Midnight, for her own adventure. Her memory, like a shining star, lives on in the Bear Rebel stories.
The third book in the Bear Rebels series, Remember the Bears, is dedicated to her fighting spirit. Her courage inspires us to always keep trying, and to never give up. We remember Frances.
